To attain the best results from the Basil and Ginger First Reader Series I have always worked on a Farm Animal theme for the first term in the Reception Year. I organise an excursion to a farm where the children will be able to see a sheep dog in action and see the animals in a hands on situation. We make big books on farm animals and have pictures of the animals with captions around the room... Judy Harrap

Word list one
The words used in the Basil and Ginger First Reader Series are taken from nationally accepted High Frequency lists, colour words and words introduced with the Farmyard theme. The children will need to be familiar with the first 24 words before receiving the readers. They will then be confident with reading the first 30 books.
While children are reading the series of books containing these words, the teacher would be introducing the next word list.

Reading Checklist
To use the checklist, cross each square one way when the child receives the reader and cross the opposite way when reader is returned. This checklist can be stuck in the Reading record/Communication book.
