Innovation, Implementation and Results
After teaching Reception/Year One children for 26 years in rural, country & city schools I retired from teaching in 1996. During the next year I missed my involvement with young children and spent quite a bit of time comtemplating the ways in which children learn.

I began to put pen to paper and using Basil, a very friendly black & white border collie who lived next door and Ginger my sister's cat, I started writing a very simple reading scheme, initially for children with learning difficulties. When I asked a friend to trial the scheme, she used it successfully for her entire Reception class.

I returned to teaching in the Catholic system in 1998 and my Principal, Mr. Mark Fitzpatrick, allowed me to use the scheme (Basil & Ginger) to teach my Reception/Year One class. I was thrilled with the results attained and had extremely positive feedback from parents. This was at St. Michael's School in Woomera, where I was teaching 75% American children. I continued to use the reading scheme with every class until my recent retirement from St. Teresa's Primary School in Brighton.
