The Basil and Ginger Reader Series was used with great success by the author within the school community of St. Michael, Woomera. As a parent and past Principal of St. Michael's School, the series clearly motivates and greatly assists with the early development of children's reading.

I used the Basil and Ginger Reading Program with a group of new receptions in a composite R-2 class. They and their families loved the readers and activities and it was wonderful for the whole class to watch their confidence and sense of achievement grow as they progressed through the program. The program lends itself to a number of themes within the classroom.

The Basil and Ginger reading programme is an excellent resource for emergent readers. Our daughter related well to the characters and enjoyed reading about farm life! The repetition combined with the steadily increasing difficulty of the text, proved to be very encouraging and rewarding for the children.

When teaching Year 1, I found this series very useful to encourage the reluctant readers who hadn't previously enjoyed reading. The simple, repetitive text, interspersed with pictures, gave the children confidence in their reading ability. The size of each reader meant that it was quickly finished and so the children felt a sense of achievement. Children always enjoy reading about animals and Basil and Ginger were easily identified as pets.

My husband and I thought the Basil and Ginger approach was excellent. Our son did so well and loved this innovative series of readers. We are thankful that he had the opportunity to use them and wish the Basil and Ginger project every success.

The Basil and Ginger program has familiar characters - Basil, a dog and Ginger, a cat - that most children can relate to. The program contains the high frequency words that are needed in everyday reading - this, is, here, etc.
The words and picture (rebus) format helps students with understanding and fluency when reading. Initially words within the one sentence all have different first letters. The children enjoy the activities which are able to be extended if you wish.
I have used this program with children with special needs and they find it easy to follow as it is repetitive and is structured in such a way as to help them build a bank of sight words that support them in other activities.

Our three boys were all lucky enough to be taught in Reception at St Teresa's Brighton by Judy Harrap. They all learnt to read using 'Basil and Ginger' and we found it be a great learning foundation for their reading. They all really enjoyed the series and are all now very competent readers.
